LANGUAGE BARRIER: Michel, the man who'd like to teach the
world to talk
By John-Paul Flintoff
Mar 27, 2004
If we put our minds to it, we could all be multilingual. Or so says
Michel Thomas, a Polish-born refugee, survivor of labor camps in
Vichy France and agent of US counterintelligence who founded a "Polyglot
Institute" in Beverly Hills in 1947. He now runs Michel Thomas
Language Centers in New York and California, and his tapes and CDs
teaching French, German, Italian and Spanish are the best-selling
language courses in the UK. After just eight hours of instruction,
Thomas claims, beginners will have practical and functional use
of whichever language they choose.

Sunday Telegraph, London:
Brush up your bad language
(January 7, 2003)
Britons abroad usually end up shouting at the locals
in English. But Clare Wrathrall has found a way to sound like a
native...
This is the season of resolutions, and along with quitting smoking,
learning a language is surely up there as one of the most popular.
We may be a nation of hopeless linguists, with neither the opportunity
nor the inclination to learn languages -- since 1992, the number
taking French A-level has declined by a third -- but when traveling,
attempting to communicate in the local language, however clumsily,
can transform your experience.

Manhattan, Inc.:
"He taught (students) to speak, read and write a foreign language
in as little as ten days - without memorization, drills, or homework.
Thomas himself carefully selects and trains the teaching staff,
matches the instructors to students, and tailors the material to
one's professional and personal needs. His teaching methods, though
unorthodox, are acknowledged by all to be highly effective. There
are even those who call him a genius...The course...involves the
use of tapes. It took Thomas more than twenty-five years to develop
and refine these tapes, and ...everyone goes away swearing by them."
The New York Post:
"Thomas' technique is no homework, no memorization, but complete
immersion...His program is so successful the New York Chamber of
Commerce and Industry has officially endorsed it, and businesses
are among his most avid clients."
Wesley Posvar, Former President of the
University of Pittsburgh, (as quoted in Germany's Manager Magazine):
"The results of a ten-day course correspond more or less to
four semesters with two-hour periods twice a week. The pupils are
stimulated to think and combine in a type of intellectual acrobatics.
The student learns to his astonishment the unexpected ability to
learn quickly. The course is so fascinating that one is disappointed
every time lunch break begins."
Diversion:
"The Rolls Royce of language schools...The roster of graduates
reads like the Who's Who of Hollywood or a survey of the Fortune
500. A unique approach to foreign languages...His learning system
breaks the barrier by eliminating the frustration, fatigue, and
boredom. This revolutionary learning method has received accolades
from the academic community. Michel Thomas has guaranteed the impossible
and delivered."
From Daily News Business (comparing the
leading language schools):
"Thomas' fee is the same as the others, but that's where the
similarities end. He promises - and backs it up with a guarantee
- that with no memorization, no drills, no learning by rote, and
no homework, you'll be able to speak, read, and write French, Spanish
and German in 10 days. In fact, after five days, you will be reading
newspapers and magazines in your chosen language."
The Daily News
"He provides what he calls, 'three master keys' - logical ways
of thinking, with the help of visual and verbal cues - to unlock
the tenses of the languages. Everything is presented in easily digestible
steps."
