About Portuguese
Portuguese has a wide geographical spread. This is as a result of the long voyages made by the Portuguese in the 15th and 16th centuries when they ventured far in their caravels and larger ships, and reached lands then unknown to the Europeans. These seafarers went as far west as the Americas and as far east as Australia and Japan. Today, Portuguese is the official language of Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, and Portugal – including the Azores and Madeira. It is also a co-official language in East Timor, Equatorial Guinea and Macau. The total estimate of native speakers of Portuguese is over 210 million.
Start Portuguese
LISTEN, ABSORB AND SPEAK PORTUGUESE NATURALLY
This 1-hour digital taster course is for beginners who are new to the Michel Thomas Method. Learn over 50 essential words at the heart of European Portuguese and how to put them together to make yourself understood. From the very beginning you will be able to construct simple phrases by listening and thinking out answers for yourself. During the course, you will join Michel Thomas Method teacher Virginia Catmur, plus a native speaker, and 2 students in a live lesson. The course will take about 3-4 hours to complete and is available to stream or download via the Michel Thomas Method Library app. It is the first hour of the Foundation course.

Foundation Portuguese
LISTEN, ABSORB AND SPEAK PORTUGUESE NATURALLY
Foundation Portuguese is an 8-hour digital course that will give you basic competence in European Portuguese. The language is broken down into building blocks in such a way that you listen, speak, respond and move on to ever-more-complex sentences. Within the first hour you will be able to construct simple sentences. By the end of the course, you will have the confidence to understand and speak basic Portuguese. You will learn at your own pace, pausing and repeating where necessary, and complete the course in about 20-30 hours. This course is available to stream or download via the Michel Thomas Method Library app.
This course incorporates the Start course.

Intermediate Portuguese
LISTEN, ABSORB AND SPEAK PORTUGUESE NATURALLY
Intermediate Portuguese is the next step in your language journey and follows on from the Michel Thomas Method Foundation Portuguese course. It will build on your existing knowledge of European Portuguese as you join Michel Thomas Method teacher Virginia Catmur, along with a native speaker and 2 students in a live lesson in which you are encouraged to participate. Your understanding of Portuguese will deepen as your knowledge expands to covering things like tenses and other basic grammar, all introduced in simple building blocks with the same no-pens, no memorizing method. This digital course will be completed in 15-20 hours and is available to stream or download via the Michel Thomas Method Library app.
